Types of Sash Windows We Offer

Box Sash Windows

Box sash windows are the most basic choice. They are simple windows without any other obstructions, making them the default option that many people decide to use if they want a clear, single-section lower pane to look through. These fit well with most glass doors.

Spring Sash Windows

Spring sash windows take a box sash and replace the weighted system with a spring. This spring allows for easier opening, effectively spring-loading the mechanism – which also reduces the overall bulk of the frame and makes it a much slimmer choice.

Georgian Sash Windows

Georgian designs are made with a ‘six on six’ design. This means that both panes are split into six distinct ‘spaces’ with grid-like struts, the same design that many beautiful period windows still show off.

This makes them the common option for traditional sash windows but doesn’t actually have a direct benefit on the window itself. They can occasionally be used on some intricate French doors, too.

Victorian Sash Windows

A Victorian window swaps the ‘six on six’ for ‘two on two’, cutting the lower and upper panes in half. This is a very common sight with old windows, but also tends to appear in modern British houses often too. Again, the difference is mostly cosmetic. Some front doors may also use this as windows.

Edwardian Sash Windows

Edwardian sashes are a combination of the other two options, using a ‘six on two’ design. This means that the top pane is split into two rows of three, although there isn’t a specific arrangement or pattern for how this is done.

The bottom pane is often completely clear in these windows, meaning that they still have all the visibility of a box design. However, this isn’t always the case, and it heavily depends on the design. Some doors also use a design similar to this.

Sash Window Frame Materials

High-quality materials are important when working with these designs, even if you don’t need any repairs. Nearly three-quarters of all original traditional sash windows are gone, including the timber windows, usually due to wear and tear or poor maintenance.

Timber Sash Windows

Timber windows are another design meant to replace wooden windows, mostly by using real wood (specifically, toughened timber) and adding additional finishes to help protect it. These can be better than even uPVC frames and offer much more character, but they also tend to be more expensive.

Sash Window Glass Types

Using clear or frosted glass in one of these windows will not make a significant difference to the draught-proofing or other core details, but it can still be a big decision to make. Switching from one to the other after installation is much harder than deciding ahead of time.

Clear Glass

Clear glass gives you an unobstructed pane but also means that you don’t have any inherent privacy without curtains or something else to cover the window up. Most people use these for rooms where curtains and blinds are common, like the living room. Clear glass also appears on many single doors.

Frosted Glass

Frosted glass trades a clear view for excellent privacy, scrambling whatever’s on the other side. These are more common in bathrooms, French doors, front doors, bathroom/shower doors, and other private areas but are also a great addition in terms of aesthetics.
